Institutionalized Corporate Complicity

By karen | February 6, 2008

A big part of the problem is that there appears to be either a widespread denial, or a “who cares?” attitude, on the part of big companies & corporations, that identity theft is a crime that affects victims, sometimes for life. I long ago gave up contacting Yahoo!’s “fraud” folks ’cause they never followed up on the numerous phishing emails I would forward them. More recently, I ordered something from Amazon.com through their web-site. A little later I received an email letting me know my order had been shipped. Later that day, I received another email, pretending to be from Amazon, saying there was “a problem with my account, or the card you used to order with,” & “letting me know” my order had not been shipped. In addition, it threatened me with “suspending your account” if I did not respond, & provide them with the “necessary information.” I got the street address for the real Amazon.com, printed a copy of the bogus email for them, & wrote a letter explaining what had happened I also volunteered to do anything needed to hunt down the pond scum that was counterfeiting their messages, obviously with the intent of tricking unsuspecting Amazon.com customers into revealing their personal information so they could vacuum up all their money & threaten their other assets. This all happened just before Christmas - I still haven’t received even an acknowledgment that I had written, much less any news of what they are doing, if anything, to put the brakes on this scam. I’m not holding my breath: That seems to be ingrained corporate policy nowadays - Make it easy to order on-line, but leave people totally on their own when slimeballs put the bite on them.
