recent check forgery

My husband and I are recent victims of check forgery in Minnesota. Someone began using checks with all of our joint checking account numbers and information on them. Luckily for us, a smart employee at a Sears store became suspicious and the forger was caught. Because of this employee’s diligence, we were able to close the account before any of the forged checks began coming in. They now total over $2000 and we have no idea how many more were written. I would welcome any suggestions as to how to avoid this. We have no idea how this person obtained our account information. As of now, we do not think he has any other financial information on us, but I am sure we will find out soon if he does.
