« It Doesn’t End! | Main | Surprising ways identity thieves can get our personal information »

Times have changed

By karen | August 8, 2007

Values have changed. Thirty years ago it wasn’t so easy to commit crimes of fraud and theft. Today it could be anybody from the high school jerk just thinking he’s pulling a prank to the hardened criminal who makes his living off of others peoples credit. And it is so easy for these crooks to get the necessary information to do the job. DON’T GIVE YOUR INFORMATION AWAY! Even if you think it is legit. Remember no one should be asking for your personal information (e.g., social security number, driver’s license number, date of birth, etc).

Did you know more women are getting into identity theft than ever before? *According to a 2004 study by Judith Collins, a professor at Michigan State University, in more than a thousand randomly selected identity theft cases, roughly half the culprits were women. Her conclusion was that men are apt to be higher risk takers than women, but since identity theft entails so little risk, a lot of unethical women find it alluring.

* Stat from the book by Frank W. Abagnale, “Stealing Your Life.”
